Seungyoun Hahn is a visual artist whose practice draws from the sculptural traditions of Makonde art in Tanzania. He develops a personal visual language by translating the organic forms and symbolic structures of Makonde carving into painting, stained glass, and object-based works. His approach places ancient sculptural sensibilities in conversation with contemporary abstraction, creating a body of work that moves fluidly across materials and disciplines.
Stained glass plays a central role in his practice. Each piece carries an irregular pattern and distinct colour that cannot be mechanically reproduced. These qualities introduce depth, rhythm, and luminosity into his work, allowing him to blur the boundaries between surface and structure, and between painting and sculpture. Through these visual experiments, he explores how colour, form, and light can shape spatial experience.
His ongoing series titled Sakweka reflects the complex and transformative journey of human life. Abstract forms and layered tones symbolize moments of challenge, resilience, and emotional transition. The wooden frame designed for the series extends this narrative beyond the canvas. Its curved contours and carved openings draw inspiration from Makonde carving and express the idea of refined traces that emerge through hardship and growth.
Hahn continues to expand his practice toward lighting objects, spatial installations, and functional sculptural forms. His work seeks new possibilities across materials and media, guided by an interest in how visual language evolves through the interplay of colour, structure, and light.
